After Toronto & Cannes, Berlin International Film Festival is the latest movie gala to voice support for the Iranian Actress Taraneh Alidoosti’s arrest and express support for the people of Iran “fighting for their rights.
Why Taraneh Alidoosti Was Arrested?
Taraneh Alidoosti was detained on 17th December, Saturday, by the local authorities of Iran after she posted a picture of herself without wearing the HIJAB and holding a slogan in the Kurdish language, that the AFP translated as “Jin. Jiyan. Azadi.” (Woman. Life. Freedom.), which is reportedly a slogan of the ongoing protests in Iran. According to reports, she was arrested because she was charged to spread false information.
On Monday, 2 days after her arrest, The Berlin Film Festival posted on its Instagram handle, “This weekend, Iranian authorities have arrested Taraneh Alidoosti, one of the country’s most famous actors and a guest of the festival several times, after she publicly showed solidarity with the recently executed protester Mohsen Shekari in an Instagram post.”
Further, the Berlin Film Festival said in the note that “The star of Oscar Winning movie “The Salesman” has always used her influence to educate the world about the Iranian regime.”

Also, Taranah Alidoosti had announced previously that she would not leave Iran and would fight for her and Iranian citizens’ rights and freedom.
“The actor is only one of many recently targeted and arrested celebrities, artists, and sports personalities who have used their platform to educate about and speak against the Iranian regime. The Berlinale continues to stand in solidarity with the women and men in Iran fighting for their rights,” it said.

They stated that Berlinale would continue to support and stand in harmony with the women and men in Iran fighting for their rights and freedom.
According to reports, we got to know that actress was arrested because she did not provide any proof of her claim.
The Instagram account, where Alidoosti used to post and openly express support for protestors has also been taken down( Suspended ).
Previously, film festivals like The Cannes Film Festival, Cameron Bailey, head of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Iranian-French actor Golshifteh Farahani, and British actor of Iranian origin Nazanin Boniad have voiced support for the actress Taraneh Alidoosti.
Protests erupted in Iran since Mahsa Amini’s death in the month of September. Mahsa Amily was arrested by Iran’s morality police, they said that she was arrested because she did not cover her hair properly with the mandatory Headscarf HIJAB in Iran. Where she fainted at the Police Station and died after three days. Which resulted in the eruption of protests across the country to which authorities responded with a fierce crackdown.
