Pathaan: Former CBFC Chairperson Says Movie is a “Victim Of Controversy”

What Did Pahlaj Nihalani Say?

Reacting to CBFC’s decision, Pahlaj Nihalani, the former chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the removal of a “saffron” bikini scene from the upcoming film of Shah Rukh Khan.

Nihalani, who led the organization from 2015 to 2017, believes that the film has become a victim of controversy and speculates that the CBFC may have been pressured by the ministry to delete the scene. He has spoken out about the issue, expressing his thoughts on the matter.

Speaking to Etimes, He also said that “there is no such guideline that says that a color can be cut. You can suggest changes if there is vulgarity or obscenity. But if you call cuts because of color then it’s a wrong proceeding. There could be some pressure from the ministry, Pathaan is a victim of Controversy. The CBFC must have got pressurized by the ministry to delete this portion of saffron color. Otherwise, they had cleared the costume and the shot in the trailer.” He added in his statement.

According to Pahlaj Nihalani, it is the prerogative of the committee of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to decide on any necessary cuts or modifications to a film.

However, he believes that the Chairperson of CBFC Prasoon Joshi may have come under pressure from the ministry to scrutinize “Pathaan” closely due to the presence of a “saffron” color in the song “Besharam Rang because it is not the right of the Chairperson to see a movie, however, he must have been pressurized by the ministry to see the film closely.”

Pahlaj Nihalani has noted that films such as “Padmaavat” (2018) and “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” (2015) have also faced calls for boycott prior to their release. As the former CBFC chairman (2015-2017), Nihalani remembers receiving a letter from the ministry regarding the potential law and order issues surrounding these films before their release. Nihalani believes that “Pathaan” is just the latest in a series of films to face controversy and calls for a boycott of the film.

What is the Besharam Rang Controversy?

Besharaam Rang is the first song of the film Pathaan starring, Shah Rukh Khan & Deepika Padukone. The Controversial song “Besharam Rang” is a dance number in whcih we can see Shah Rukh & Deepika romancing in exotic locales in Europe.

However, There has been significant criticism directed towards them due to the orange color of Deepika’s dress. Due to this The Central Board Of Film Certification has asked them to make suggested changes in the film and song as well.
